Our curriculum has been carefully designed to ensure that children are successful in an ever-changing, modern world. We have three key threads that run through everything we do at De Bohun:

Aspirations

We aspire for our children to develop the skills they need to thrive in the modern world. To achieve this, we teach both substantive knowledge (what you need to know) and disciplinary knowledge (the form of enquiry), with high and equal expectations for all learners.

Our staff have carefully planned how pupils learn and practice their skills, and our skills and knowledge subject progression maps show this journey. The skills and knowledge that children acquire in the early years, coupled with developing excellent behaviour for learning, prepares them for the start of their journey in Year 1. We strive to ensure that every child reaches their potential in every lesson and that children are challenged and supported to achieve.

We have ensured the very best possible provision for our children by employing subject specialists to teach certain areas:

• Our physical education curriculum is taught through Non-Stop Action and overseen by our PE Leader.
• Our computing curriculum is taught through Cringe Technologies and overseen by our Computing Lead.
• Our music curriculum is led by Therese Conway.
• Our French curriculum is taught using KAPOW and overseen by Amanda Jamil.
• The British Sign Language (BSL) curriculum is taught by specialist practitioners and led by Amanda Jamil.

Inclusion

We have high and equal expectations for all learners. Through bespoke assessment models, we ensure that high aspirations lead to the best outcomes for all children to continually enhance our practice. We ensure that children who may need extra support receive it, enabling them to thrive. Our adaptive teaching supports inclusivity as all children have scaffolds to ensure that they have the opportunity to achieve.

At De Bohun, we recognise the vital role technology plays in modern life and aim to equip every child with the confidence and skills to use it effectively, while developing a strong understanding of computer science, digital systems, and programming. Computing is taught weekly through a personalised curriculum, beginning with “Understanding the World” in Early Years and Nursery, and progressing to the NCCE scheme in Key Stages 1 and 2, linked to wider school learning. Pupils develop computational thinking, creativity, coding skills, and the ability to manage a range of software, while also learning about online safety, responsible digital engagement, and the risks of internet use.

With access to a specialist computing suite, individual computers, iPads and Chromebooks, and expert teaching from our Subject Specialists, children gain digital literacy and see technology as a tool for learning, innovation and self-expression. Above all, our aim is to prepare pupils for the future, enabling them to thrive in a world where many of their future careers do not yet exist, and to make meaningful contributions to society.

At De Bohun, we provide children from Year 2 to Year 6 with a high-quality French curriculum that fosters a love of languages and an appreciation of other cultures. Weekly lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure children build progressively on their knowledge so they know more, remember more and understand more. Taught in whole-class settings with adaptations for accessibility, lessons use games, songs, stories and role play to inspire enthusiasm, with a strong focus on speaking and listening that gradually extends to reading and writing. French is assessed termly through targeted questions, ensuring progress is monitored and built upon, and by the end of Year 6 pupils are well prepared to continue their language learning with confidence at secondary school.

At De Bohun, History inspires pupils to explore the past and understand how it has shaped the world we live in today. Our curriculum helps children develop a sense of chronology and an appreciation of significant events, people and societies, both in Britain and across the wider world. From Early Years, where history is introduced through stories and experiences, to Key Stages 1 and 2, where we follow carefully sequenced units, pupils learn to ask questions, weigh evidence and consider different perspectives. Lessons encourage curiosity and critical thinking, while building knowledge of key themes such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, and similarity and difference.

Through History, pupils develop analytical skills, empathy and cultural awareness, learning how past decisions and actions continue to influence our present and future. They gain confidence in using historical sources, forming arguments and expressing their ideas clearly. By the end of Year 6, our aim is for children to have a secure understanding of local, national and global history, and to carry forward the skills of enquiry, reflection and critical judgement that will support their learning across the curriculum and beyond.

At De Bohun, music is central to a broad and balanced education, nurturing creativity, self-expression and a life-long love of the subject. Our curriculum develops children as performers, composers and listeners, building skills through singing, playing instruments and responding to a wide variety of music from different times and cultures. From Early Years, where children explore sound through songs, rhymes and instruments, to Key Stages 1 and 2, where pupils receive weekly music lessons and singing assemblies, learning is progressive and rooted in developing rhythm, pitch, accuracy and expression. Lessons build knowledge incrementally, supported by Kodaly pedagogy, and focus on performing, composing and understanding the interrelated dimensions of music. Opportunities to learn instruments such as the recorder and ukulele are provided, alongside access to specialist tutors, while extracurricular activities such as choir, ensembles and termly concerts enable pupils to perform and collaborate.

Our music curriculum inspires excitement, confidence and pride, with children eager to share their achievements. It fosters transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership and performance, while encouraging participation in festivals, choirs and instrumental groups that connect pupils with the wider community. By the time they leave De Bohun, pupils have developed the skills and enthusiasm to continue their musical journey, carrying with them both an appreciation of music’s cultural richness and the confidence to perform and create.

At De Bohun, Physical Education (PE) is taught from the Early Years through to Year 6, ensuring every child has access to a wide range of sports and physical activities. Our curriculum is designed to nurture both physical and mental wellbeing, helping children develop resilience, teamwork and confidence while discovering their strengths and interests. Working in partnership with Non-Stop Action, we focus on building competence in a variety of sports, with opportunities for both individual and team competition within school and against other schools. In Year 5, all children also learn to swim competently and safely over a distance of at least 25 metres, gaining essential life skills in water safety and self-rescue. With over eight hours of physical activity available each week, plus a broad programme of after-school clubs, pupils are supported to stay active and healthy while enjoying physical activity as part of everyday life.

Our PE curriculum makes a significant impact by developing core skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving and decision-making, alongside lifelong values including respect, resilience and resourcefulness. Competitive opportunities in football, netball and dance further enrich pupils’ experiences, giving them the chance to perform, rehearse and represent the school locally. By the time they leave De Bohun, children not only have the skills to participate successfully in a range of sports but also carry forward the confidence, discipline and enjoyment that physical education fosters.

At De Bohun, Religious Education (RE) is taught in line with the Enfield Agreed Syllabus, through the HEP curriculum resources, ensuring that all pupils receive their statutory entitlement and experience a clear progression of learning across the key stages. Children develop knowledge and understanding of the major world religions, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and Sikhism. Our teaching not only helps pupils learn about religions but also learn from them, encouraging reflection on values, faith and commitment. Through visits, visitors and first-hand experiences, children gain meaningful opportunities to explore different beliefs and practices, promoting spiritual, moral and cultural development. Parents and carers retain the right to withdraw their children from RE, with alternative arrangements provided where necessary. By the time they leave De Bohun, pupils have a well-rounded appreciation of religious diversity and the role of faith in communities and wider society.

Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children from any or all RE lessons. This should be discussed with the class teacher and / or Headteacher in the first instance.

At De Bohun, science is fundamental to helping children explore, understand and influence the world around them, both natural and man-made. Our aim is to build on pupils’ natural enthusiasm and curiosity, encouraging them to question, investigate and make sense of the phenomena and events they encounter. From the EYFS, where science is introduced through play and “understanding of the world,” to Key Stages 1 and 2, where children develop practical skills in asking questions, gathering evidence, experimenting and presenting results, our curriculum ensures progression and engagement. In Years 3 to 5, we follow the Haringey Education Partnership (HEP) scheme, supporting deeper scientific enquiry while fostering responsibility for the environment, sustainability and conservation. By Upper Key Stage 2, pupils extend their knowledge further, developing rational enquiry skills and a strong understanding of key scientific concepts.

Through science, children at De Bohun develop critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity, learning to observe, predict, analyse and present their findings clearly. Practical, hands-on experiences nurture curiosity and confidence, while embedding essential knowledge about the natural world and the impact of human activity. By the time they leave, pupils have a secure foundation of scientific understanding and the skills to think analytically about the world, preparing them to continue their learning and engage meaningfully with science in their future lives.

At De Bohun, writing is a key priority within a broad and balanced curriculum, with the aim that every child leaves as a confident, competent writer prepared for secondary education and beyond. Our curriculum immerses pupils in a variety of text types, helping them to understand their features, purpose and impact, while also developing secure knowledge of spelling, grammar and editing. Lessons are carefully planned to build on prior knowledge, introduce new skills in engaging ways, and ensure children can write for different audiences with clarity and purpose. Scaffolds and challenges are provided to support all learners, so every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential as a writer.

Children take part in daily writing lessons, often linked to high-quality texts studied in both reading and writing sessions, reinforcing the strong connection between the two. Sequenced lessons include drama, vocabulary building, handwriting, grammar, shared and independent writing, and opportunities to plan, draft, edit and publish. Writing is also embedded across the wider curriculum, allowing pupils to apply and refine their skills in different subject contexts. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils have developed a writer’s craft, confidently manipulating language, grammar and punctuation for effect, and sustaining their writing across extended pieces. Crucially, they transfer these skills into other areas of learning, demonstrating a deep understanding of how writing can be used effectively for purpose and audience.
