SEND at De Bohun
Our vision for children with special educational needs and disabilities is the same as for all children – that they achieve well in their early years, at school and in college, and lead happy and fulfilled lives.
We value every child and welcome children with a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND). Our inclusive approach to learning ensures all children are provided with opportunities to be challenged at a level that is appropriate for them. We identify children who need further support or additional resources through our regular Enhancing Outcomes Meetings, where the SENCo and Deputy Headteacher meet with the class teacher. These meetings also allow for discussions around support, updates on the children’s progress and next steps.
In the first instance, all children with SEND are catered for through quality first teaching. Once identified, if the child continues to need support, we carefully monitor children with specific needs by setting up an IEP passport. These are reviewed termly with parents, the class teacher and SENCo. Children who have an EHCP are supported in small groups in their mainstream class. Each child is valued and their needs and learning styles are a core part of their bespoke planning and learning journey.
Designated Unit
We have a Designated Unit for children with Complex Needs, including Autism. Our Sunshine, Starlight and Butterfly rooms cater for children from Reception through to Year 6 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Children are supported by specialist teachers and practitioners who are committed to improving the outcomes for children with SEND. Staff expertise enables children to develop the skills they require to begin their educational journey. Our aim is to equip the children, giving them a solid grounding that will allow each child to independently navigate through life as they grow up and prepare for adulthood.
TThe children are at the forefront of our thinking and we have designed a curriculum and assessment framework around their needs. This puts the child at the centre to ensure a holistic approach in their learning at all times, so they are receiving the education they require and deserve.
Each topic is designed to be meaningful and relatable to each individual child, with core life skills and key academic lessons woven into this immersive curriculum. This ensures that the children have the opportunity to engage in learning throughout their school day. This provision is separate from the mainstream school and allows for a more bespoke, learning experience tailored to meet children’s complex needs.
We are very proud of our learning spaces and have spacious classrooms to allow for tailored and appropriate learning environments. There are separate areas for the children to engage in different areas of the curriculum, including an exciting outside area that encourages the children to explore, enjoy and engage in a variety of activities. We also have a sensory area, separate toilets, as well as an eating area to help the children to develop vital self-help and life skills. We use elements of the TEACCH priorities, PECs, visuals and zones of regulation as part of our toolkit to provide the very best learning environment.
All admissions must go through a consultation process by SEN Services at Enfield Council. Children must have an EHCP and a diagnosis of Autism.
Outside Professionals
At De Bohun, we encourage working partnerships and supportive relationships between professionals, parents and the child.
We understand that some families need support to access professionals and we ensure an open dialogue is created where parents can feel comfortable and confident to approach us with concerns they may have, to support them to make informed decisions about their child’s education.
The SENCo works closely with families and outside agencies / professionals to allow the very best outcomes for children to be achieved.
Parent Partnership
We believe that working closely with parents is essential, especially if your child has an additional need. Our home school books provide an important communication link between home and school. Class teachers keep in regular contact with parents and are available to discuss any concerns you may have.
We actively encourage parents to be part of their child’s school life and include parents if there is extra support that may be taking place at school through Pastoral Support Plans or Risk Assessments. The SENCo is available to support any parent’s specific SEND queries or concerns.
